Heart Shrine Drabbles

1. Unneeded

Logically, Eita knew they didn’t need any protection. After all they were strong, capable, resourceful shinobi and it wasn’t like the Forbidden Forest was foreign territory. It might have been the chuunin exam, but it was still in their backyard and while strange things seemed to be occurring, there were no enemy ninja. On the surface it seemed to be little more than a difficult camping trip. Still he couldn’t help it. Eita wasn’t sure if it was the age difference, the fact that they had other teams to return safely to, or perhaps just stress. But whatever it was, he had given up on getting rid of that feeling long ago. It was simply a part of who he was.

He smiled softly, looking over his currently resting team as the night went on. Jun was curled up near the fire, while Saya held onto Kurayami who occasionally tightened her grip on the other girl. He hoped whatever they were dreaming, it was something that made them happy. Shaking his head, Eita stretched his shoulders, then tightened his grip on the senbon needles between his fingers and narrowed his eyes as he continued to watch the night.

2. Family

“Ubume? What are you doing here?!” Eita blinked as he came around the corner, the lamp he had originally intended as a makeshift weapon now lowering as he looked at his guest and the state of his kitchen. It had been a loud crash that had originally sent him shooting up from bed in the early morning and grabbing the small lamp on his desk on impulse. He wasn’t sure what he expected to find, though as his brain slowly began to awaken more, he realized he shouldn’t have been surprised at all.

This wasn’t the first time Ubume had shown up in his kitchen, and he knew it wouldn’t be the last. Though it was the first time she had shown up at four in the morning.

“Ah, sorry to wake you. I dropped the milk.” Ubume said, taking a bite of something she had pulled from his fridge.  “Don’t worry though, all cleaned up. Also, you’re out of chicken.”

Eita sighed, rubbing his eyes, trying to wake up a bit more and hoping things would make sense once he did. At four in the morning though, that wasn’t going to happen.

“I never have chicken…”

“We need to fix that.”

“But that doesn’t explain why you’re here…”

“I’m eating.”

Eita face palmed.

“Oh! You mean here as in in your kitchen. Well I just got back from a mission, I haven’t eaten in a few hours, and I know don’t lock your doors, so I just let myself in. I figured I’ve done it before and we are family so no worries.” she smiled taking another large bite of leftovers and adding some sauce to it.

There was a part of Eita’s brain that had finally woken up and told him there was something to be taken from that sentence. A key part he should focus on. However it was having a hard time getting past the other ninety percent that was operating on autopilot and three hours sleep. He sighed, shaking his head.

“Ubume, look, it’s not that I mind you coming over for breakfast or lunch…or…food in general, but…” he paused midsentence as something finally clicked. “Wait, back up and say that last part again.”

The young shinobi finished chewing another bite, a mischievous smile lighting her eyes.

“Ahh yes. The other reason I dropped by.” she set the bowl down on the counter and pulled a piece of paper from her vest. “I’d planned on waiting till later today to show you, but since you’re awake, now is as good a time as any.”

She handed Eita the paper and he yawned as he unfolded it, trying to focus on the writing on the paper. It took a few minutes, but once his vision cleared he saw it was some kind of Warashi family tree.

“My mom had me do some cleaning before I left. Going through old records, pulling out pictures, glorified filing basically. Pretty boring.” she sighed, her tone indicating just how boring it had been, before it picked up again. “However, I did find some rather interesting information, particularly on members of our family. It seems we’re a bit larger than expected.”

Eita continued looking over the paper as he listened, trying to make sense of all the names. Then he saw what Ubume was talking about. On one of the lower branches, he clearly saw his mom’s name staring back at him. He blinked, looking back and forth between Ubume and the paper several times before everything settled in his brain.

“So…”

“You’re a Warashi, Eita.” Ubume smiled suddenly very close to his face and nearly making him jump back. “And you know what means? We’re family! And you know what being family means?”

“My kitchen is your kitchen?” it was just a guess.

“No…well yes, but more importantly, it means we need to celebrate. And what better way to celebrate than with a feast. Now come on. You’re up already, I’ve got some time before I have to be home, so lets get a head start on the celebration.” she was already moving, flinging open the door of his fridge with grandeur, and pulling out vegetables, fruit, meat and whatever else she could gather.

He wasn’t quite sure how it happened, but in a matter of minutes he was helping spread everything from his fridge on the table and turning on the stove for what needed to be cooked. There were a lot of questions running through his spinning head, but at the moment only one thing managed to get to the front of his brain.

If he was a Warashi, did that mean he had to start eating chicken?

End
Just trying to get to know Eita better through a bit of writing. Not as many as I thought they'd be, but the second one turned out a bit longer. Just kind of fun and silly. The first one takes place during the chuunin exams and one of Eita's watches. The other involves him learning more about his family history, particularly in connection to one of the clans. :XD: Threw in a tiny allusion to Harry Potter there as well, mostly because I couldn't help it and it was extremely late when I wrote these. But it works.

Anyways hope you guys like em. ^^
