Guy/Tora: Gone Down Fighting

Description

Another attempt at digital painting. I swear one of these days I will get it!! Also I apologize for how horrible the fire looks. I was trying something new and I really need more practice. ^^;

As for the picture itself I did this mostly because in the Justice League and Green Lantern comics there have been a lot of incidents where Tora's gotten injured and Guy freaks out, grieves, or flies into a rage depending on what happened. But I don't think I've ever seen a time when Guy's gotten really hurt and Tora's freaked out. Which I think would be really awesome and also terrifying to see because of her powers and what can happen if she loses control. So I decided to draw something where the roles were reversed. I really wanted to write a short drabble or something for this, but my mind just isn't working at all right now.

Though for some reason I get the feeling that this happened during one of their many breakups and involved Guy protecting Bea, because he knows how important she is to Tora even if he can't stand her. And in the end it wound up costing him everything. I really do think Guy's dead here, because his ring's gone. Hopefully it just rolled off somewhere, but...I don't think it did. :(

Hope you guys like it. Critique is always loved and really begged for. I don't care how harsh it is, feel free to rip it apart. I just want to get better at painting. :please:

What an emotive piece, and a situation where a role reversal might be a very, very dangerous thing. O_O
This is an interesting painting experiment, and a great idea, but I think there are a few things you could have done to really push it.

First off, I think that though the fire in the back looks good (and the fire in the front isn't bad, just needs some modification of technique.) that there would be some benefit to additional details along the ground and in the air. Embers scattered over the ground being snuffed out by or trying to encroach on Tora's power. Flecks of light being blown up by the fiery updrafts. Burning coals embedded in the tree trunk in the foreground. Think how a bonfire or a wildfire looks. It's not just pockets of flame, it crawls over and seeps into everything it tries to consume. The pallet however, particularly for the background sky, looks great. The hot, reddish maroon color works well to give it a smokey, hellish atmosphere.

I also think you could have done more with the frost creeping around Tora, making it clearer that even in a firestorm she's an incredibly powerful force. Brighter colors, reflections of the fire on frost crystals, ice creeping up the tree and steam rising from where the firestorm is meeting her power. You could really push the effects here, depending on the look you were going for.

Additionally, though your lighting is very good in this (particularly considering the number any type of light source you were working with) that you should have pushed your shadows and highlights harder. Along the trunk of the tree you could have used a highlight to give depth and draw it forward from the rest of the background, and particularly in some of the folds of Guy's body you could have gone with very nearly black shadows.

This is a cool piece, and one that was very brave to even attempt. There's a lot going on and a lot of new things you tried, which has resulted in a very cool piece of art. There's a lot that could be improved on in it, but it in one impressive way to jump into a lot of different techniques!
